Medicare Overview:
Medicare is health insurance for people who are age 65 or older, certain people under the age of 65 with certain disabilities, or anyone with End-Stage Renal Disease. Medicare is now administered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). You are eligible for Medicare if you or your spouse worked for at least 10 years while paying in to Medicare and are at least 65 years old and are a United States citizen/permanent resident. There are certain exceptions for somone to enroll on Medicare under age 65 such as due to disability or End-Stage Renal disease.
When you prepare to move to Medicare, you will be able to do so during your Initial Enrollment Period. If you had decided to delay going on to Medicare due to having affordable employer coverage, then you will be able to enroll later on during a Special Enrollment Period. For more information, visit the Medicare & you guidebook.
